In the end, working heart to heart is both a choice and a discipline. Our perspective is that everyone has the capacity to do so, but not everyone takes on the discipline. If one accepts, even tentatively, the benefit of working heart to heart, why doesn’t everyone?
Perhaps there are two key reasons. First, the fear of being exposed. Second, the fear of doing harm. If a client knows we have our own flaws, will he or she still respect us? Will we be worthy of being paid for this work? Will we be embarrassed? Will we, now that we know we are imperfect, harm the client? Erik de Haan describes three categories of critical moments in coaching, hence also in supervision of coaching. To paraphrase de Haan, there are critical moments of method, of relationship and of existence (de Haan, 2008). The latter of these seems most relevant to working heart to heart, because our self-image is at stake.
If these fears prevent us from transformational work in coaching, we will benefit from participating in supervision. If they are intractable, we may benefit from deeper therapy before continuing.
At the end we must ask, “So what?” With all the potential traps and vulnerabilities of such intimate work, why would one enter this heart space? The answer is very simple: Transformational learning requires us to be changed, and to be changed we must allow ourselves to be seen and experienced. If we withdraw at the critical moment of transparency so vital to great learning, we cheat ourselves and our clients.
The physical heart opens and closes to do its job of pumping blood. Supervising heart to heart is no different.
